Artist’s Biography:

Anne Slattery was born in Massachusetts in 1979 and raised in New Jersey, Wisconsin and Tokyo. She received a BA in Visual Arts and East Asian Studies from Oberlin College in 2001 and a MFA in Printmaking with a Certificate in Book Arts from the University of Iowa in 2005. Her prints and books have been in exhibitions across the United States and her work is held in educational collections in the US and Croatia.

Anne's travels in North America, Europe and Asia inspire and give reference for her work, exploring issues of identity and place, through printmaking, writing and artists books. She considers herself a "fake printmaker", as one who is trained in but not devoted to the medium - using whatever means necessary to express an idea, but appreciates the speed and independence with which printing allows her to create.

She currently resides in Syracuse, New York where she produces screenprints, letterpress prints and artist’s books, preferably ones you can interact with.

Artist’s Statement:

What with moving from place to place and her constantly changing lifestyle, Anne has temporarily misplaced her identity. Nor is she sure where to look for home. So in a style of magical realism where emotions and thoughts have solidified into symbols, characters and places, she tells stories to help find that new identity and determine the next destination in her journey.

Her artwork is inspired by travel and the need to identify herself in that new environment as well as the process of growing up and continually becoming someone new. Collected ephemera like photographs, brochures and ticket stubs as well as memories of specific events and feelings provide the physical starting point for her work. Added to that are the cultural expectations for each of the roles she has filled in her personal history.
